Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Where the hell did Jon Lieber come from? And why as a Yankees fan was it so easy to have confidence that he'd pitch well even though there's no concievable reason why he should get the crap knocked out of him?
Pedro's slipped another step this year. He's not even dominant, period. He's a #2 starter on any good team nowadays. Santana, Schilling, Johnson, Oswalt, Clemens, Leiter, healthy Prior/Wood, Schmidt, Mulder before the last month, a healthy Hudson, healthy Halladay, Garcia, Colon, Sabbathia, Willis, Pavano, Sheets, Peevy, Eaton, Mussina, Morris....All guys I'd take over Pedro this year and absolutely for next year. Hell, maybe even Russ Ortiz.

Schilling's out for Game 5 now, too. It might not matter--the Red Sox look pretty demoralized right now, and having 3 games in Fenway is the only thing keeping this series from being a guaranteed sweep right now.
