If Death comes in threes, then he's had his fill of Loyola College for a long while. Our college chaplain, Father Hartley, S.J. died last night, and he was only 56. He was actually supposed to be a presider at Dr. Varga's funeral this Saturday, and of course he was at the Mass for Fr. Ridley at the Cathedral yesterday.
I only knew Fr. Hartley in passing--he walked by our cross country practices a few times this year, and I was always impressed by the fact that he knew what was going on with our team, even to what meet we had coming up next. That was really cool. I also would see him at almost any lecture, no matter what the topic. Basically, he seemed like a really nice guy, and somebody way too young to not be here anymore.
He wrote an article in our Jesuit Perspective series in October discussing one of his many causes.
