Not a surprise, although, now that he's pope, perhaps his raging moral fortitude can be directed toward remedying this.

What I don't understand, though, is why the Church fights this. Coming out viciously against child molestation is the easiest victory in the world. The Church could kill offending priests in cold blood and all people would say is, "He got what he deserved." Defending these people and claiming jurisdiction over that of the state's criminal investigations is both absurd and unique -- would you see the Church do this for a priest who killed someone or who stole a car?
It's the guys in charge, unfortunately. There are many great, wise and moral clergy who will never reach the annals of power because they dare to demonstrate common sense on this issue.
