Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

CNN.com

So there were riots and at least 15 deaths last week because of this report, namely that interrogators at Guantanamo Bay desecrated the Koran, the Muslim holy book.
Great job, Newsweek. Nothing like putting out a story that gets people killed, even as it is acknowledged reporting in war areas and secret places like Guantanamo are exceedingly difficult. But who will get blamed for those deaths? Probably the U.S. government and military, not Newsweek.
Either way, there are assuredly enough real abuses by Islam-hating people that actually occured. Write about one of those, as those deserve attention.

And as for the inevitable, "This story is all part of a conspiracy by right-wing crazies!" Serious people, learned people, saying this. So it must have some merit worth examining.

If it's not a conspiracy, it's a damn good excuse for those opposed wringing their hands instead of working to change things. But if it really is some huge conspiracy, well, then it's time for those who believe that to start a revolution. Because obviously there's no democractic hope left if "they" control everything. For real. Revolution. The violent, killing kind. Assassinations and the like.

But, that's the crazy talk, right?

EDIT: Some things got added on...also, here's the Newsweek self-examination of the issue.
Also, this Instapundit favorite, Austin Bay, has his usual smart take on the matter...usually leans conservative but is direct, concise and knowledgable.
