Daniel Okrent has been the public editor, or the guy who hold the paper's feet to the fire when they mess up. He especially takes the Op-Ed columnists to task for repeated (and disproven) assertions, as well as owning up to things he wish he had done better. Every paper should have a public editor, or ombudsman, not just for appearances, but to truly improve the integrity, quality and accountability of the journalism produced.
