I heard the radio interview exchange, and Feller did not come off well. Although he's 86, he's still very much with it from appearances, so he can't use age as an excuse. Here's the best defenses for him: Many older folks don't update their terminology, so their words sound out of place; he's complained about today's players not knowing the fundamentals for a long time now.
On the other hand, it still was odd to single out just "Caribbean" players. Even if he had clairified to say he was talking about the language barrier, that would have helped. I don't know. At this point, perhaps the media should just refuse to talk to him and use age as a reason.
EDIT: Feller did mention the language barrier as a major part of the reason, and reiterated that he said that "Caribbean" players are learning the rules (Des Moines Register interview). I'm not sure how much Feller really knows about that subject, considering he's retired completely. But whatever. I don't think he's a racist, just that he made a mistake. There is a difference. Good comment from bumfromjersey on the matter, too.
