Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Well, it's good to know that the reporters who are actually in New Orleans realize what the real situation is. It's not simply "thugs" who waited out the hurricane so they could loot, etc., as some feel. Nor is being a refugee the fault of those people who stayed -- the evacuation could have been called earlier, and it's really not easy to move almost 500,000 people. Plus, look at the television -- a lot of these people are old and in poor health. They probably take an hour just to get dressed in the morning, much less evacuate themselves and go to an unknown destination ahead of a storm.

Anyways, it's a sign that we weren't prepared. One of the most vital cities in America with regards to infrastructure and supply lines via ports and oil pipelines, and we had nary a clue as to how to react.
The Netherlands, another low-lying land, had a similar disaster in the 20th century. And they reacted and fixed it. We'd better do the same, because there's no guarantee that there won't be another hurricane at any time.
