Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Add one more to the list of bad personnel decisions by the New York Yankees in the last three years. Jose Contreras was clutch beyond belief tonight -- give up the lead? Who cares, I'm going the distance and that's all you're getting.
Now, he would not, in all likelihood, been quite this good for the Yanks. But at 15-7, the savior of the White Sox's near-collapse at season's end, and a horse out on the mound this series (17 1/3 innings, 6 runs), even the lesser version in pinstripes would be welcome.

The White Sox. Wow. Lucky bastards with those calls. But they did show both how good a fundamentals team they are, as well as showing how pathetic the Yankees are for not destroying the Angels in the previous round.
And they get a decent layoff before the World Series starts to be ready to throw some more gems. The bullpen? Throw some simulated games. You'll be fine -- or rather, not pitching won't be an excuse if you stink in the Fall Classic.
