For the, oh, five of you that actually have this blog bookmarked, you know it's largely silliness. Funny links, baseball, destroying Bronson Arroyo's reputation...all inconsequential stuff.
But there are some people, friends and peers of mine, who are doing wonderful things for others, things that require them to give a great deal of themselves in unfamiliar or even difficult situations. They are in varied situations and are scattered about the U.S. and the world. But all of them have something in common: They're finding themselves, growing as people and understanding the common bond of humanity through their efforts wherever they may be.
And...a couple of them blog about it. I hesistated to link to them, since they aren't blogging to gain traffic (or random comments), but felt that we can gain something from them even if we don't know them personally.
First is my friend and teammate Jackie, who is working with Jesuit Volunteer International (I think I got the name right) in Micronesia for two years. It's a total life adjustment, and something that many of us couldn't do even if we wanted to try.
The second is Stephanie, who was one of the interns in Minneapolis with me. She's in South Africa with the State Dept. in some fashion. Again, I'm terrible with the details, but it truly looks like a great experience that really makes a person re-think many things about the world.
And at the least, both are taking chances and seizing the moment -- in positive ways. It's pretty cool to see.
