In my humble opinion, Torre made only one really great move tonight: bringing in Rivera to start the 8th. Bringing in Leiter ended up well, but Erstad is not that dangerous a hitter and Chacon didn't look finished. I can forgive that because Torre probably thought back to leaving Wang in too long in Game 2.
But then the batting substitutions? Ruben for Crosby, the only outfielder who can move faster than a shuffle? Of course, Scot Shields threw the only pitch Ruben can hit, a not-great fastball, in the only spot he can hit it, the inside-belt-high half of the plate, and Ruben delivered. He is, ahem, a professional hitter. I really do love Ruben, though. At least if he's a one-act hitter, he delivers that one act flawlessly.
But then that makes you take out the DH and put Bernie in CF, where he can't get anything. Rivera gets in trouble when he overly jams hitters who hit flares. Guess who's not catching those, should they happen.
Also, the Tino-for-defense thing is not as exciting when it's clear that Tino can't hit a lick. Wow, he's bad.
But...credit to the Yanks for getting big walks, running the bases well, and not fleeing from a tough situation. And Shawn Chacon for pitching a big game when you really couldn't have demanded him to deliver (unlike, say, Randy). And Rivera? Automatic.
