Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

So, I did actually get back Monday, but it was right before work. And today I slept in because I had no sleep the night before. Hanging out at college, man, it's the best thing in the world but not a good way to rest.

Anyways, answering the comment mail: Pettitte is one Astro I'd like to see back with the Yanks. But Clemens is another. Sure, he went home to be near his family, but he could have picked the Rangers as well. But he wanted to win. Besides, his wife won't leave him if he plays outside Texas, unless Pettitte's wife. We don't want another Jeff Gordon fiasco here.
Clemens did sort of leave the Yankees hanging. But, actually, he didn't. He filed for free agency and never filed retirement papers after the 2003 season. So, therefore, he did not retire or commit to it in any tangible way. The Yankees, as I've mentioned before, burned themselves by not offering arbitration and forcing the hand of Clemens, or at the least, obtaining draft picks if he had declined arbitration and still signed with Houston. Or perhaps they should have talked with Andy Pettitte, who obviously knew Clemens wanted to play and lobbied him hard. But they ignored him, too, to the point where his wife got her way. So, while it was an unfortunate situation, I can't blame Clemens or be mad at him.

I think, for the first time, that he's really going to retire this time, though. Or, finally get hurt enough where it won't be truly his choice.
