When you could have had Frank Thomas be the 1B/DH backup and played Crosby in the OF occasionally?
Bronx Pride's Jon Williams brought this up in my post about signing Damon, and it's a good point.
Thomas was hurt and hurt often last year, but he was a power machine when he did play. Unless his asking price was delusional, he would have been an interesting addition into the mix, although his defense may be a question mark.
Bronx Banter addresses the silliness of Bernie having a real role, or even playing for the Yanks. But what's done is done.
Thomas could still come and be a backup DH/1B, but it's unlikely he'd settle for that little playing time.
Beyond the Thomas (or Piazza) scenario, why bring back a 37-year-old not-very-productive player when you can have a much younger, slightly-more-productive player in Bubba Crosby? I know sentiment wins out, but it also won out last year. And the year before that. Enough, already.
