Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Baseball Musings
He links to an article calculating the added revenue that the Texas Rangers would generate if they signed Clemens, based on the Astros' increased attendence over the past year or two. It seems to be an odd way to figure out whether to sign a player, in my estimation, at least in this case. It's not as if Clemens is on a farewell tour -- he was arguably the best pitcher in baseball, albeit one whose body started breaking down after 180 innings.

If a team is going to sign him, obviously, the money they're willing to offer will be impacted by the revenue effect they think he'd have. But with Clemens, assuming he comes back, the biggest issues are whether a team thinks he'll put them over the top and, of course, whether he's interested in playing for said team. Otherwise, the Devil Rays would be falling over themselves to get this attendence magnet.
