Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

EDIT: For a funny, but extremely inappropriate and offensive recap, WWTDD has it covered. I warned you.

Reese Witherspoon was so, so, so close to not thanking her husband. Wow. The suspense in his face.

"Crash" was as underwhelming a winner as I've ever seen. But it makes sense: The other competitors were too small-fry except for "Brokeback." And that movie suffered partly, from some voters supporting gay rights and acceptance except when it counts. But it possibly lost some voters who felt it was the best film, but also thought that a "Brokeback" win would be looked at as solely a political move and not for the quality of the filmmaking. That sentiment probably helped Ang Lee win Best Director.

Why did Charlize Theron have the world's biggest bow on her shoulder? It's like she was in a formal outfit left over from her "Arrested Development" guest spots.

I called the Rachel Weisz win, although it wasn't a hard pick.

That 10 minutes I watched is the most I've seen in many years. I'm just not an award show guy. I also didn't get the "Brokeback" controversy. I mean, gay characters? Not really that big of a deal. I think it was way more risky to make a Western. Seriously, how many of those do you see anymore? Gay characters? A whole bunch of them. Cowboys of any orientation? No way.
