for the Indianapolis Colts with the defection of Edgerrin James to the Arizona Cardinals. The past 70 years lead me to think that the door for James has closed, too, and that he's merely decided cold cash and colder hearts are the way to go, but if Arizona is ever going to shock the world, now is it.
Actually, the door isn't quite closed yet for the Colts, either. Peyton can doubly prove his greatness if he can win the big game without a big running back.
Good luck to him, though. McNabb, Marino, 1980s Elway, early 1990s Steve Young, and many others couldn't win without a big RB. It's just going to be tougher (though maybe a good excuse) for Manning.
Elway and Young got their backs eventually, but who will replace James? Peyton seems more like Fran Tarkenton and Jim Kelly, who had HOF-caliber backs in Chuck Foreman and Thurman Thomas, but fate never dealt them a kind hand.
Maybe I'm wrong. But Colts fans can't be thrilled with this latest development.
