Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Today is the long-in-waiting, much-anticipated, standing-room only wedding of my best friend and his lady friend, as I've never referred to her before and never will again. It should be an amazing extravaganza, considering he's an only child and she's the last of three. It's also the first wedding I've attended where I knew the people since I was 5 years old. So I'm enjoying it.
Today also is the 5-year reunion of our high school class. Thankfully, the 5-year is not a big deal, because I doubt I'm going to travel to that. As nice as it'd be to see some people. I have to work tommorrow night, so I'm thinking of that 4-hour drive.
Back to the wedding...
The key part of this whole affair, of course, is my wedding toast, as the best man. From researching the topic, too many best men think being an asshole is a good way to go. Not I. I can be one, quite easily and with much eloquence. But it's self-defeating. No, I will poke fun, but I also won't forget to acknowledge what an incredible event and what incredible people we're celebrating. If I can do that, then the reaction it gets will be good.

The reaction, actually, is a concern. Long in planning, but hopefully not too long in length, my toast been so hyped that I may not be able to top myself. Not only did I months ago scare the maid of honor into going before me (lest she be unable to follow my verbal theatrics), I myself have billed the event as something that will, and I quote, "have them rolling in the aisles and weeping in their seats." I don't even know if that makes sense.

Anyways, it's a marvelous day for all and a joyous occasion that is worth witnessing. And also, the Yankees game is a 4:30 game, so no one will miss anything by being at the wedding. If anyone thinks I'm mixing up my priorities, the groom notified me of this fact 6 months ago. So there.
