Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

I think I recall recently talking about this opportunism (iten 3).
Well, Ozzie doesn't think he'll be going to sensitivity training because that would require him to take English lessons first.
Here's his actual quote:

"I think the commissioner ordered that in order to calm things down, but, obviously, to attend one of those, I'll have to take English lessons first."
Ozzie. You don't call the commissioner's bluff. Sure, he ordered that to calm things down, but rather than wink and nod, Ozzie throws it in his face. Just like he does in every other situation, he decides to kick everyone in the groin and see if they will get mad or merely slink away. He's consistent, which is admirable, but still.

Selig's response should be to order him to take classes approved by MLB within two weeks or face a suspension until said order is obeyed. It's not even that there's any merit to the classes or that they'll help. They are probably silly and will help almost no one, let alone Ozzie. The reason to push this issue is to show some cojones to Ozzie, tell him that he's not the Big Man on Campus when he's out of that clubhouse. In the real world, MLB rules and everyone falls in line. That's what he should do. It's what David Stern would do, for instance. Show Ozzie he'll bite worse than Ozzie can bark. That might actually gain more respect than anything else.
Sadly, it's unlikely anything close to that will happen. Instead, it's more likely that Ozzie's called the situation perfectly, and kudos to him for it. If you can dodge the bullet, you've done something.

I never got around to how it's total bull that Ozzie can't speak English, but I think that everyone knows that already.
