Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

John Rocker opening his mouth goes right to the heart of why MLB has to stay on top of this situation with Ozzie Guillen.

You can't let someone mock your penalties, especially when you're their employer. Or better yet, in this case, Bud Selig is the judge and Ozzie Guillen in the defendant.
We talked earlier about how Guillen dismissed the idea of sensitivity training, basically calling the bluff of Selig and MLB. I said immediate punishment should be forthcoming. Now, a little later Guillen did somewhat diffuse the situation by saying (through a spokesman, but still) he'd go.

So back to John Rocker. He made a pitstop at his sensitivity training years ago (about 15 min.), calling it "a way for the scared little man, Bud Selig, to get people off his [backside]."

Thanks, spineless commish.

Again, this is not a personal thing with Ozzie. I can see why he'd dislike Jay Mariotti, and almost everyone has tossed around that gay slur at some point, especially in macho environments, so he's not some unique offender. But he crossed a line in a very public way, was caught, and attempted to excuse his behavior and blame others.
It's my Golden Rule that you can do anything you want as long as you don't get caught. Once that happens, it's time to suck it up and face the music, to use two unrelated cliches.
And further, it's about MLB. They have to be able to levy appropriate punishments without thinking that no one's going to listen -- especially when the players union has no piece of the battle and the guy's own team is unhappy. How much easier of a disciplinary situation can you ask for in baseball?
