Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

ESPN.com jumped right on the A-Rod bandwagon tonight with the headline "A-Rod's slump over." Well, that's not totally true. He's still 6 for his last 32. But he hadn't played his way out of the major leagues, either, as Steve Phillips, et al, seemed to think.
He'll be fine. I won't even link to the 800 things I've written lately about him, to spare all of you.

The real story is Randy Johnson bouncing back from the 129-pitch outing to be effective. His trade bait, Javier Vasquez, lost tonight. Maybe Randy hasn't been what they hoped, but he's been a hell of a lot better than Javier, whose career has derailed from his 2003 peak where he was arguably the NL's best pitcher.

Also, Derek Jeter is Mr. Consistent this year, tripling and doubling. He's still on pace for 100 RBI despite only 6 HR. He's also got a nice little .898 OPS. Loving it.
