Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

That's how damn good it's gotten just a few years from it being a total wasteland of no comedies ("Everybody Loves Raymond," "Friends," "King of Queens" and "Will And Grace" don't count), 8,000 cop shows (even if most were interesting) and reality beyond comprehension.

EW.com documents how the movies just aren't matching up to the gripping stuff that's on television now. The reviewer doesn't even delve much into comedies, but the drama alone is enough.

As for me, in college, I essentially watched no TV whatsoever for two of my four years, and most of the other two I was watching reruns of shows that weren't on the air anymore. I followed "Scrubs" when I could remember, "Arrested Development," "That 70s Show," and "Reno 911!" and "Chappelle Show." I also would catch "West Wing" when I could. That's about it. I wasn't into the "CSIs," etc., even though I understood the appeal.
And I'm not prejudging shows of back then. I've always made it a policy to watch almost any show that's been on more than a year -- at least an episode or two -- to make sure I'm not condemning it unfairly. Most of the time, though, I've come away convinced I was right.

Now? I watch, as often as I remember and am not at work: "The Office," "Scrubs," "Rescue Me," "Nip/Tuck," "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia," "Family Guy," "The Simpsons" (because it's still good despite unrealistic expectations), "Monk," as well as "Scrubs" and "Reno 911!" If I had HBO, I'd be watching "Deadwood," because it's wow good. And this "Studio 60" with Matthew Perry and the "West Wing" guy looks damn good. Either that, or it'll be a "Hudson Street"type of disaster. Either way, entertaining.
I still don't tune into many network dramas, but I'll put on something like "Las Vegas" sometimes because it's not bad and the women are incredible (I've been waiting for Vanessa Marcil to become big since "The Rock").

Maybe I'm just more lazy now. That's probably true. But I always watched a lot of old TV, and had since I was fairly young. There's just more shows living up to those high standards, in my opinion. And the season hasn't even started for most of them.
