The soon-to-be 43-year-old Randy Johnson is no longer the most recent man to throw a no-hitter. But that's OK, because he threw seven no-hit innings last night before giving up a triple. More importantly, he's become more consistent down the stretch, much as he did last year. And the Yankees won.
Jorge Posada is on a bit of a hot streak, but two three-run homers is ridiculous. Apparently, he also tied Tino on the Yankee career list. Speaking of hot streaks, or steaks, NoMaas caught a great error.
Derek Jeter is right behind Joe Mauer, who hit a home run last night (he still has one fewer than DJ). Jeter is not at a career high for batting -- he hit .349 in 1999 -- but Nomar is also not hitting .370-something in the AL this year. Plus, lots and lots of years have seen a batting champion at under .320. Win or lose, he's been dynamite.
In the futures department, the Double-A affiliate won a playoff game with Hideki Matsui singling in a run and Phillip Hughes striking out 13 in 6 innings.
Now if only Mariano Rivera could get healthy. $500 million won't get a ring without him.
