Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

This is getting ridiculous. Now, aging vet Mike Mussina has a busted hammy. Kudos to Sean Henn for giving a good performance, and thanks to Kyle Farnsworth for ruining all of it. Still, two out of three ain't bad. The loss isn't as bad as the injury.
Unfortunately, this just puts more pressure of Igawa, who has the disadvantage of not knowing the American hitters combined with the fact that he's not ace material. I'm not optimistic.

I think the major action took place elsewhere, though. Felix Hernandez outpitched the absurdly named Dice-K, giving up one hit just days after turning 21. His season line? 17 IP, 0 R.
And the Orioles and Tigers played 11 innings of scoreless ball before Craig Monroe hit a grand slam in the 12th at Camden Yards. The O's gave it a great effort, but used eight pitchers to do so and only had five hits. Bet that was a depleted clubhouse.
Only 13,288 attended, and that was at the start. Baltimore, which used to be a home to loyal, dedicated fans (and still is with the Ravens), is turning into a team that would be a contraction/relocation candidate were it located in a different city. Can't blame the fans much.
