Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

EDIT (06/06/07): To fix headline typo.

Fresh off his trumping of Jonathan Papelbon and David Ortiz in a span of an inning, it's worth seeing the improvement Alex Rodriguez has shown against the Red Sox this year.

2007: 13-43, 4 HR, 3 2B, 9 RBI, 12 R, 8 BB, 9 K, .302/.412/.651
2006: 16-65, 3 HR, 3 2B, 13 RBI, 14 R, 14 BB, 18 K, .246/.375/.431

Nice improvement to see. And while the Yanks have won a series a few other times this year, only to fall flat, beating the rivals should provide forward momentum. Right???

This was a great win for the Yankees. Not only did they beat the Red Sox, they won the weekend series, and decreased the Sox lead by one game. I am not sure if it will provide enough momentum but at this weekend the Yankees definitely showed that they still care and are in it to win it.

BTW - A-Rod deserves what he is getting. You might be against it but I lose all respect for any man (i.e. the Michael Jordans, Gary Paytons, Patrick Ewings) who cheats on his wife. If you want to screw around be like Derek Jeter or George Clooney and be a fulltime bachelor.

Yeah, it was definitely a big win for the Yankees. Winning a series is big but doing against a division rival and the division leader makes it more special. I agree with fatguy, I am not sure that it will give them enough momentum to get back on track but its definitely a good sign that better things could be on the horizon. Also, I think it was important for the Yankees themselves to do this before Roger Clemens returns. I am sure most are embracing his return but at the same time I doubt many want him to be tagged as the turning point in the Yankees season. Its more important that they as a team (and maybe with this series) as the turning point and that they were able to remedy the situation on their own.

Alex Rodriguez coming up clutch in what is essentially a contract year? How suprising. Yankees fans might get on the guy more than he actually deserves but they aren't idiots. They know he can and will put up great regular season numbers but I wouldn't expect any Yankees fans changing their opinions on him until he leads them (or at least put up numbers comproable to what he can produce during the regular season) to a World Series championship.

Thank you both for not mocking my misspelling of "Alex." I was in a rush.

I don't sympathize with A-Rod vis a vis his extracurriculars, but I do think it's not a baseball manner at the moment, and therefore not deserving of the saturation coverage.
Now, if he gets arrested because of it, or misses a team function, or he starts sleeping with other players' wives, then it becomes more relevant.

I agree with both points, Bum. A-Rod will always have the postseason hanging over him, which is fair in many ways, and the Yanks have to be a team where Roger makes them super-dangerous, not one where he saves them from mediocrity. They need a good week this week to do the latter and preserve hope for the former.
