Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

A change of pace for watch much, if any of. That's not really a knock; I hardly watch the NHL or NBA but enjoy both sports. But there was a ticket available and a good reason to witness the sport firsthand.

It rained. Or rather, three drops fell a couple times and everyone panicked. Given the lack of tread on the wheels, I understand, but still.

You could see the Jeff Gordon strategy coming, and it paid off. Everyone there could see an ominous cloud approaching, and it was just a matter of timing. He raced well the whole time, quickly getting into the top 10 and then parking it there, waiting for an opportunity. Timing seemed to plague Dale Earnhardt Jr., as he was top-8 most of the race except for when he really needed to be. Not quite sure what the circumstances were.

But all in all, quite the spectacle. And I mean that in a good way.

Here's just one picture to give an idea of where I was sitting.

A question I have always wanted to ask a NASCAR fan. How do you watch a car go around in a circle 300 times and not question if life is worth living anymore?

I'm not quite a NASCAR fan to ask, I guess. But the whole event is much, much more than the race. Plus, they let you bring practically anything into it, people make it into a daylong barbeque, and the drivers and their teams are much more fan-friendly and accessible than almost any other sport.
In that view, the race is almost secondary.
