Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Harking back to my discussion of the non-topic that is Alex Rodriguez chasing the AL home-run mark, WasWatching commenters discuss the various home-run chases in a great post about A-Rod's remarkable pace.

As for A-Rod's struggles last year and lack of them this year, it's all Derek Jeter's love that's been the difference.

Jeter, if you haven't noticed, is turning 33 in a week and has almost 2,250 hits. Jon Miller and Joe Morgan attempted to discuss his pacing versus Pete Rose (who, as I've surely mentioned somewhere in the archives, benefited from being his own manager through half his 40s). Unfortunately, they got Jeter's birthday wrong and Peter Gammons, a Red Sox worshiper who oddly enough also worships Jeter, had to correct them. No comment from the funny, if vicious, Fire Joe Morgan.

The Mets-Yankees rivalry, or as it really is, the Mets fans hating Yankees and Yankees fans being blase about the whole thing, has reached even the pop-culture world of Best Week Ever.

Love these Monday off-days, especially because I'm usually catching up on life at that point.
