You, or someone like you, wasn't on the Yankees of 2004-06, a young guy who could rescue, literally and emotionally, the team when it was in trouble, when one of the old guys faltered prematurely.
And Johnny Damon, welcome back (and really, since sometime in August) to the world of productive lead-off men.
Paul Byrd shouldn't be underestimated tonight. Moose Mussina is a lock to be nothing but a lock. Byrd has 62 wins over the last five years, although a below-average ERA the last two. However, for a guy who's never had stuff, he's worked from being a middle reliever to a one-time All-Star who led the league in complete games in 2002 and this season tied for the most shutouts and had the lowest BB/9 ratio.
Best hope for the Yankees? His career, according to Baseball-Reference, compares most favorably to Cory Lidle and Jon Garland. In other words, moments of brilliance, but in general, a decent pitcher that good-hitting teams will handle.
