in portraying its 1960 world that, as I'm catching some of 1958's "North By Northwest" on TCM (even though I own the DVD), I'm comparing, favorably, the show's depiction of that time to a movie from that time.
The drinking, the suits, the hats on some (mostly the older men) the banter with secretaries (though Grant is far more classy) and at the restaurant, all close if not dead on. Both, of course are about ad men, though "North" only in outline.
The dress is the most interesting point -- Grant matches the Mad Men best by looking here and here.
No one needs to tell you all how great "North By Northwest" is. It says a lot for "Mad Men" that I immensely enjoy it even after going back to media of that time.
