Afternoon Baseball

Common-sense ruminations on baseball and culture.

Finally, it doesn't seem quite like the Yankees are being held hostage for every young pitcher while the Red Sox are merely offering cast-offs and health questions.

The Yanks may even pull their offer, or so secret sources say, and one hopes if they do that they've got a waiting limo to pick up Dan Haren.

Either way, it seems, the Twins have been partially rebuffed by both teams, at least in the quality of offers.

No Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy. No Hughes and Alan Horne. Don't even talk about Robinson Cano (wisely). Up north, the Red Sox said, you want Jacoby Ellsbury, then forget Jon Lester. Still think the Yankees are offering a better deal -- even the Melky Cabrera haters have to admit he's unlikely to be worse than Coco Crisp, but he's years younger.
